Things for the Silver Dollar Foundation have slowed down a bit over the Summer, but we are proud to announce three new grants. With the included, the foundation has contributed just over $200,000.00 to community organizations in Montreal since it was founded in March 2012.
Food Secure Canada (2013)
Food Secure Canada is a Canada-wide alliance of civil society organizations and individuals collaborating to advance dialogue and cooperation for policies and programs that improve food security in Canada and globally. FSC aims to unite people and organizations working for food security nationally and globally. The organization’s vision is based on three interlocking commitments: Zero Hunger, A Sustainable Food System, and Healthy and Safe Food. The Silver Dollar Foundation provided $20,000 to advance Food Secure Canada’s 2013 objectives, in particular its work to convene Canadians on food policy issues and play an active role in Canada’s North.

Benedict Labre House (2013)
The Benedict Labre House was established in 1952 as a day centre for the homeless in Montreal’s Griffintown neighbourhood. Today, the Benedict Labre House serves a more diverse population made up of men and women from all different walks of life. The organization provides essential services such as hot meals, emergency food bags, clothing, showers, as well as providing a variety of individualized services and programs, all which are available at no cost. Benedict Labre House benefits from the support of over 500 volunteers providing over 10,000 hours of their time. The Silver Dollar Foundation contributed $5,000 towards general repair of the Benedict Labre House building.

Mon toit, mon Cartier (2013)
Spearheaded by La Maison des parents de Bordeaux-Cartierville, the Mon toit, mon Cartier project aims to improve quality of life in the central sector of Cartierville by providing affordable housing, supporting vulnerable people, and offering a community meeting space for residents. The initiative is part of the Laurentien/Grenet Integrated Urban Revitalization (IUR) project. The Silver Dollar Foundation provided $82,000 to install a green roof atop the Mon toit, mon Cartier building, to allow residents of the building access to green space and the ability to grow food on the roof.
